At the request of UNFPA in Hanoi, the Institute of Social and Development Studies (ISDS) conducted a qualitative study in 2007. The primary purpose of this qualitative study is to examine the issue of pre-natal sex-selection in Vietnam (problems, causes and influencing factors).

Field data were collected in Binh Dinh, Ha Tay and Bac Ninh provinces over a one-month period starting in early July 2007. These provinces were purposively selected using criteria based on their normal or excessively high sex ratio at birth so as to provide as wide a spectrum of views and opinions regarding this issue as possible. Key thematic findings from this qualitative inquiry show that while the respondents more often than not deny practices of sex selection, during discussions they are willing to share both their knowledge and strategies concerning how to give birth to a son. It can be clearly noted that male and female respondents have adopted different tactics to meet the desire for sons. Generally speaking, women seem to be more active than men in seeking an appropriate strategy.
